If miles of woodland trails, a gentle stream, and a placid lake sound like the beginnings of a fun weekend plan, get ready to head up to the Carl Sandburg Home in Flat Rock, NC. Your human and canine crew will enjoy exploring all five miles of hiking trails. Weighing in at over 200 acres, this prime piece of hiking heaven is only 45 minutes from Greenville.
Carl Sandburg is one of our nation’s most famous poets. His late widow sold his estate in Flat Rock to the National Park Service after his death in 1967. They’ve been doing a fantastic job maintaining the property ever since. It’s fee free if you just want to hike. The docent-led house tours are given daily for a modest fee. Although the grounds are pup-friendly, the house isn’t. So save the tour for a rainy day!
The trails on the property range from a real heart-pumper headed straight to the top of Little Glassy Mountain to a bucolic stroll around the large lake by the parking area. From mountainous to flat as a pancake, you’ll find a trail that’s the perfect fit for you and your dog. Nature and history await. So what are you waiting for?
