As warm weather sets in, it is an important time to think about your pet’s flea and tick medicines. As the weather gets hotter, the more these pests will become a problem. If your pet is not on a monthly flea, tick and heart-worm medication, you are asking for trouble. Once fleas establish a presence on your animal, they quickly become a problem in your house as well. Ticks can carry a variety of diseases(mainly lyme disease) which can be costly or fatal. Heart worms are the silent killer of thousands of pets each year. Your pet should always be on heart-worm preventative.

When choosing meds for your pet, there are several things to consider. Some topical flea and tick treatments will wash off if the pet gets wet. Some cover fleas, but not ticks. Be sure to always read the instructions carefully before administering any medications to your pets. I can’t tell you how many time I’ve had a customer try to leave topical medications with me to apply just after a bath. Most require a period of 24-72 hrs after bathing for a dogs natural oils to replenish in order for the medications to disperse properly. Also, always be sure to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after administering pet meds. Monitor your pet for possible side effects. Salivation, vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea and depression are things to look for. If your pet shows signs of side effects, contact your local vet. At Woodlands Pet Resort we do require all pets in our care to be treated monthly for heart-worms, fleas and ticks.

Hope everyone is enjoying their Spring! Make sure to get your pets out and exercising…they love this time of year!

With these unusually warm days of winter, it can be hard to remember that nights still get too cold for comfort. For those of you that choose to let your pup romp outside for hours at a time, or even overnight, it is important to follow a few safety precautions.
First of all, always provide adequate shelter for your dog. This includes fresh, clean, warm bedding. Wood shavings, straw, or blankets are a must in any doghouse and must be checked regularly to ensure the bedding is clean and dry. Secondly, always make sure your pup has access to fresh water. Change the water regularly and every morning after a freeze. Watch your dogs behavior more closely in poor weather. Be aware of any signs that the weather may be getting the best of your pet. For those pups that are sensitive to the cold (old, sick, short-haired, small dogs or puppies), only let them out in the cold long enough to potty. Always provide your pets a nice warm place to sleep that is draft-free and off the floor. Dogs with arthritis need extra care this time of year. The cold weather stiffens them up and can cause great discomfort. Take it easy on the old-timers.
A dog’s comfort should be utmost this time of year. Always be aware of the weather and always act accordingly. Even though it’s above freezing now, a cold spell will come our way. This is the most dangerous time of year for pets, so always take care to keep your pet out of the cold.

When thinking about your pets this holiday season, it’s important to think more about quality than quantity. While it’s tempting to buy prepackaged stockings filled with low quality treats/toys, try thinking about what you are purchasing for your pets in a different light. First and foremost, many treats and foods you find on the market are filled with corn, cob, cereals and other junk, containing little nutritional value. Try looking for organic or holistic treats. They are never really much more expensive and you can feel confident you are making the right dietary choice for your pet.

When purchasing toys and accessories, shop around. Be sure to pick toys that are safe for your dog or cat. Anything containing small plastic parts or beads is a choking hazard, as are rubber balls and toys if your dog is a destroyer. Rope toys are great for dogs teeth, but should always be used with supervision. Never give balls to a pet that are too small. They are major choking hazards.

In this economy, many of us are tightening our budgets. Going overboard on gifts for the pets is not always an option. Remember, the greatest gift you can give to your animal is simply affection. It’s free and your pet will LOVE any extra time you can take for them. I know the holiday season is frantic. It’s all too easy to spend every last minute of your day thinking about everyone else, but far too often our pets are pushed aside while we take care of everything else in our life. Don’t forget to take a few minutes whenever you can to remind your pets that you love them. A nice long walk on Christmas morning(after the 20 min. of chaos) is all that any dog would really want.

In short, buy affordable quality items for your pets. Any treats/foods should be all natural and ideally organic. Don’t break you budget on the animals, when all they would ever really want is your affection. If we all were more like the pets.

Merry Christmas!
